Unboxing Follow-up: DT H2O 1810 eCollar

What is Unboxing?: Unboxing originated with Unboxing.com, a site dedicated to helping people show off their new techie toys, favorite gadgets, consumer electronics, and more. As their tag line states "Vicarious thrills from opening new gear."
DT System Dog Training eCollarThe DT H20 1810 ecollar works as advertised and that is such a comforting thing. It did not over promise nor did it under deliver. You will recall we posted an Unboxing story on the DT H20 1810 ecollar a while back. While using the collar--and yes to answer your question, I did try it on myself. I thought I had a duty to understand how the ecollar worked. A slight nick on the lowest setting had my complete attention. And I thought this might not be such a good idea, so while we experimented with the ecollar we also tried an alternative training method positive reinforcement. The ecollar was obviously negative reinforcement. I had many conversations with trainers who are devotes of the ecollar and think they are the best invention in the world--even better than ATM cards, sliced bread, and canned beer. On the other end of the spectrum are the trainers who believe in positive reinforcement, e.g. give the dog a treat if he performs as directed. The positive reinforcement trainers abhor the use of an ecollar and think it is cruel and inhumane. The negative trainers wonder what the dog will do if you run out of treats. Regardless which side of the fence you are on, I really wanted my money back on the DT H20 it worked so well in such a short time with Cooper when teaching him to "come" and to "leave it." I never turned the power intensity past 2. As Cooper has grown from a long legged pup to a muscular adolescent, he tests his boundaries and judicious and prudent use of the ecollar has produced excellent results. But back to the actual collar. The controller comes with a lanyard, which can be convenient especially if you have a check cord in one hand and a wand in the other to teach "whoa." The nick button does just that, a quick zap that's designed to get their attention. The continuous button provides stimulant for a longer period, no more than a few seconds and then turns off. Use this if your pup thinks the neighbor’s cat is lunch. We used the DT ecollar in the land trust where there are streams and beaver ponds, steep hills and deep gullies and never once did we loose a signal. We used the tester, which is included in the kit, just to be sure. The collar strap is actually the antenna and is stiff since wires are sandwiched inside the plastic covering. Waterproof and definitely shock proof--Cooper proof would be more correct. It holds a charge over days and weeks depending on use. To recharge, pull out the rubber stoppers and plug in the charger. Both collar and controller can be charged at the same time. The DT ecollar definitely convinced me that gun dog training can be easy and safe. And yes, we still give positive reinforcement with treats as well.

What’s Uncle Sam Buying These Days‏

Uncle Sam.No doubt our troops are the best equipped in the world. It takes more than just coming in with a low bid for Uncle Sam to pull out his check book. Sabre Defence Industries has been awarded a contract to produce 4,952 M16A3 and 702 M16A4 rifles to support the Navy, Marine Corps, and some foreign military customers. Uncle Sam entertained 9 bids before awarding it to Sabre Defence Industries. What makes this so significant is that Sabre is only the third company in the 45-year history of Uncle Sam buying M16s, to be awrded the contract. The other two vendors are Colt and FN. Bushnell was also recently awarded a multi-million dollar contract by the Army for a special military version of their Elite 1500 Laser Rangefinder. The civillian version of the Elite 1500 is at the end of the link. Uncle Sam figures the laser rangefinder will enhance the combat capabilities of troops in the field. And Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) received another $104.3 million order for small-caliber ammunition from the Army. ATK is the largest supplier of ammunition to the United States military. So a Sabre rifle, ATK ammo and a Bushnell rangefinder--sounds like Uncle Sam is planning some varmint hunting.

Gun Dog House Breaking and Election Year Politics

German Shorthair Pointer: Bella. I thought it appropriate in this election year that we should discuss house breaking your gun dog. If your dog is part of your family and lives under your roof, house breaking is the first bit of training your gun pup needs. One dandy trick is to have the litter do their business on newspaper. This trains them from day one what newspapers are for. When we brought Cooper home I asked for a bit of soiled newspaper, which didn’t cost a cent extra. Back at home I placed the well-used newsprint outside where I wanted Cooper to go and he got the idea right off. The trick is too watch your pup closely so you can tell when he needs to relive himself, and then take him to the door and out to his newspaper. So you might ask what is the connection between house breaking dogs and election year politics? Well it all depends on what newspaper you want your gun pup to pee on. If you are liberal you might want your pointer weeing on the Wall Street Journal, maybe the Chicago Tribune or The Philadelphia Inquirer. If you have a conservative bent then the Boston Globe, Washington Post or New York Times should be your retriever’s newspaper of choice. Let us know what newspaper suits your dog's business.

Hunting Blog Plug: The Black & Tan Bombshell

A blatant and unapologetic plug. The Black & Tan Bombshell is just silly in love with Gordon Settlers. They are gorgeous dogs, I must admit, even though I am a devout GSP man. I peruse the blog often and chuckled a while back when BlacknTan was smitten with side-by-sides since firing a Winchester 21. Seems BlacknTan is doomed like the rest of us with gun dogs and side-by-sides, there are never too many dogs you can own and you can always make time to shoot a fine shotgun. Take heart BlacknTan the SKB is a good gun.

Pennsylvania: The Problem With Pigs

Pennsylvania Game CommisionIf you think grouse have a problem with bobcats in NY (see You Know Grouse Hunting Is Good When Bobcats Purr), the ruffs in PA have an issue with pigs—feral swine to be exact. The PA Game Commission has given hunters the ok to shoot feral swine in 64 of the state's 67 counties. PA, like many states in the lower 48, has a problem with pigs, which pose a threat in the form of habitat destruction, disease and property damage. You’ve herd of an invasive species, well this is one and the state feels that allowing hunters to shoot feral swine while hunting other species is a way to control the pig population. So from the end of muzzleloader deer season in mid-January to the beginning of spring wild turkey season and from the end of spring turkey season to the beginning of archery deer season in the fall, hunters have the right to kill a pig. So how many of the snorting cloven-hooved beasties inhabit PA? The state is not certain but guesses that some 3,000 could be rooting around the state. Five hotspots are Bedford, Bradford, Butler, Cambria and Tioga counties. The New York Times recently ran a story on hog hunters in TX using dogs protected in kevlar vest and collars.

Sarasota Clue Revealed: Beretta's Silver Pigeon II

I guess the clue was too easy in the Sarasota Sporting Clays posting: Il fucile da caccia è inceppato or roughly translated from Italian to English: "The gun for hunting is jammed" or "The shotgun is jammed." Sorry my Italian is rusty. I recieved emails with the correct brand and a few with the correct brand and model, and I would like to award a prize to those who responded, but I don't even have a blaze orange UplandFeathers.com cap to give away. For those of you who didn't guess right or are just wondering, the culprit shotgun was a Beretta Silver Pigeon II. It should be no surprise to those of you who hunt and shoot regularly. Gear breaks. That's why they make spare parts. Shortly after arriving back in CT from FL, I contacted Beretta Service Repair and crossed my fingers. Customer service departments can make or break a company. I don't even want to start in on a mega-size home improvement store I've had dealings with. Beretta's service department asked me to put my problem in writing and ship the note along with the unloaded shotgun to their repair facillity in MD. While they were at it I asked to have the trigger pull weight lightened. You can see the letter below. Come back to find out what the oldest maker of firearms in the world had to say about their shotgun and the type of service I recieved.
